ALBUM REVIEW: Marilyn Manson – We Are Chaos

No introductions are required here, even those outside the rock and metal community know who Marilyn Manson is. A dark version of David Bowie comes to mind now I think about it. Music wise, I had heard key singles and covers from him. This is my first time actually sitting down and listening to a full album by him. His latest album We Are Chaos has been out for nearly a week now, understandably it is receiving praise from fans and critics alike.

The album starts off with Red, Black And Blue. As I have mentioned previously, a good album opener will either impact you or entice you in; the best album openers do both and that’s exactly what Red, Black And Blue does. From the moment you press play; you instantly hear Manson still has the ability to shock. Those spoken words at the beginning glued me to my seat, they grabbed my attention. I knew from this moment I was in for a curious ride.

Given the heavy and industrial opener, I was confused and surprised with what came next. The title track takes a mellower stance to it but it doesn’t loose that distinctive Manson sound that has served him well over the last few decades. This was one of the things I admired about this album, you didn’t know what was coming next and this added an exciting element to this already striking album. Below are just a few examples of what this amazing album has to offer.

Half Way Forward & One Step Forward is one of my personal favourite tracks on the album. I have one word to describe this track; stunning. The mesmerising melody on the piano enticed me the moment this track started to play and everything else that followed had me captivated. If you needed to use something to describe the phrase ‘less is more’, this track would be the thing I would use.

Perfume takes me back to when I first heard the distinctive stylings and music from Manson, it shows that distinct style of his is here to stay. It now provides a reminder of why I was interested in his music to begin with. The track’s funky rhythms and artistic vibes make me think that this could easily be the goth rock equivalent to David Bowie classic Fashion.

It ends on a spectacular note with Broken Needle. This track is a fan favourite and from listening to this, it’s easy to understand why this is. It’s a beautiful ballad that has been delicately put together and it’s quite safe to say that this is one of the best ballads I have heard for a long time.

We Are Chaos is a work of art, it leaves you feeling transfixed and wondering what certain things can mean to you. Understandably, long time fans of the band have welcomed We Are Chaos with open arms. The stunning sounds will certainly draw new fans in as well.
