Freya Ridings – Freya Ridings
Whilst it’s rare for me these days to take to a new artist that isn’t rock or metal, it’s a welcome breath of fresh air. The latest artist to do this for me is singer-songwriter Freya Ridings. I came across her by chance when her latest single Weekends appeared on my YouTube adverts whilst waiting for another song. My first thought was that she has an absolutely beautiful voice; Florence Welch and Kate Bush came to mind instantly. I also thought that she is a brilliant lyricist.
After doing some delving, I saw she released her self-titled debut back in 2019 and so naturally went to check it out. Each of these songs told a different story but they all have one thing in common; they captivated me. Her stunning vocals and poetic lyrics were upheld by the brilliant melodies. Let me take a moment to take you through my personal favourites on the album.
Lost Without You lead me to this debut; it’s very rare for songs to bring tears to my eyes but this one did. This is due to the relatable lyrics about losing someone important to you along to the ethereal melody displaying the fragile emotional someone will be feeling when experiencing a loss.
For the duration of Holy Water, you will be rejoicing and celebrating. This song’s energy is so infectious that you will stop whatever you are doing just to clap along to this track. Everything from the upbeat rhythm to the gospel style choirs will grab and keep your attention.
Ultraviolet is mysterious and airy. There’s an aspect of mindfulness called Beginner’s Mind; this is when you let go of all expectations as if you are approaching something for the first time. Ultraviolet encourages this curiosity and to let go of anything weighing you down.
This album came as a complete surprise to me; not only because I took to it so quickly but I instantly chose this for my album of the month. If this album has taught me anything, it’s to step out your comfort zone once in a while and try something different. You never know what you might find.
