SINGLE REVIEW: Negatory Effect – The Dirt (Will Become My Home)

Does black metal meshed with dance sound intriguing to you? Of course it does and you can hear this in NEGATORY EFFECT’s brand new single The Dirt (Will Become My Home). Whilst the band have been around since 2020, they came onto my radar very recently. Due to the wonderfully weird catchiness of their latest album Never Trust A Tuesday, it’s one of my favourite releases of the year so far and I am now converted. This new single looks into band member Lokisson’s battle with depression. Here is what he says:

“The Dirt is a track that lyrically, deals with my own battle with depression, and explores both how the world can look in my eyes during depressive bouts, and how it conflicts to my religious values, hence the references you may spot to Odin. I’ve often questioned how my Gods would view me when I am in a depression spell, would they see me as weak? The lyrics were written during a bout of depression, using how I felt and was seeing the world, and being able to also write down the conflict it brought to my mind.”

I have previously said with NEGATORY EFFECT’s music that you can never tell what’s coming around the corner and this applies to this new single. It starts off with a dance beat that wouldn’t be out of place in a night club in Ibiza that smoothly transitions into a HIM like melody. The mix of black metal style vocals screeching lyrics such as “dopamine, through the floor, no more joy, lock the door” along to the dance style music works incredibly well here. To me, it communicates the rawness someone may be feeling during those periods and the chaos that goes on internally when struggling mentally. I won’t say much else about what happens in the music as the beauty of their sound is to expect the unexpected.

One of the key things to note about NEGATORY EFFECT’s music is that it’s incredibly catchy. This single hasn’t been out long and I have already lost count how many times it’s popped into my head randomly. Other bands will be after their secret to writing such powerful ear worms.

No NEGATORY EFFECT song sounds the same as each other so if you are even mildly intrigued after listening to this track, then check out the rest of their music.
