Blackbriar – A Dark Euphony
I usually like to pick a Halloween-esque album for October’s album of the month and I have a great one to share with you all.
The month had barely begun when I came across BLACKBRIAR’s latest album A Dark Euphony. I first came across the gothic, symphonic metal troupe in 2019 when they had released their single Snow White And Rose Red featuring SNOW WHITE BLOOD vocalist Ulli Perhonen; the sheer power from that song alone drew me to BLACKBRIAR and the rest of their songs.
Fast forward to today, they have since been signed to Nuclear Blast Records and I have been meaning to listen to their newer stuff. It was on a YouTube mix of all places where I found one of the album singles Spirit Of Forgetfulness. I was so captivated by the stunning yet playful melody, I immediately went to check what the rest of the album had to offer.
The rest of the album did not disappoint. One of the things I love about BLACKBRIAR’s sound is that it contains dark undertones with the poetic lyrics and the haunting music. Alongside these dark undertones is innocence and vulnerability that is carried through Zora Cock’s uniquely captivating voice. Strong examples of this can be found in the sinister Bloody Footprints In The Snow, the whimsical folk sounds of Far Distant Land, the mysterious yet dramatic We Make Mist and the stripped down The Evergreen And Weeping Tree.
This album contains stunning melodies from start to finish; these require your undivided attention. One thing I will leave you with, this is a strong contender for my album of the year.
