NorthTale – Eternal Flame
I have heard the name NORTHTALE around the Power Metal circuit on and off over the past couple of years; but it was only this month I got to experience their sound for the very first time. They were the main support act for LEAVES’ EYES on their tour and before then, I hadn’t even listened to any of their songs. Their charismatic and passionate live performance and their amazing variety of songs caught me hook, line and sinker. So much so, I bought their 2021 release Eternal Flame and it’s been on loop ever since.
The very first thing I notice is their ability to write fantastically catchy melodies; I am drawn to those in general so Eternal Flame hit all the right spots for me on that front. All of these are put together intricately well and they keep you on your toes, so it’s important to give these your undivided attention.
All of these consist of amazing riffs and solos that no doubt have air guitarists rejoicing, soaring vocal work that helps you feel free and beautiful moments that you don’t quite expect. Before I give my conclusion, let me delve into some of my personal favourites on the album.
Wings Of Salvation is one of those tracks that has a bold, catchy melody that will swim around in your head for days after listening to it. There is a definitely a Super Smash Bros vibe to it due to the heroic vibes the song gives off. It also has plenty of things to keep you on your toes, I won’t say too much; don’t want to give away too many spoilers.
The Land Of Mystic Rites caught my attention instantly with it’s smooth, Latin American rhythm that make you want to close your eyes, forget your troubles and shake your hips. This is reinforced by the exotic music arrangements that really take you away, this one is great fun to experience live.
As well as the progressive ones, Eternal Flame contains your straight forward power metal songs and King Of Your Illusion is one of them. This belter contains lyrics about putting up your own version of how things are going backed by a bold, action packed melody.
I had the same question after the end of their set and the end of this album; why didn’t I check them out sooner? Whatever the answer is, I am now glad they have entered onto my radar and will definitely keep my eyes and ears out for them more.
